Ingram Takes Home Heisman
On the 75th Anniversary of the coveted Heisman trophy, Mark Ingram did something that no other player in the storied history of Alabama football ever did...take the trophy home. Ingram barely edged out Standford RB Toby Gerhart by 5 first-place votes and 28 points overall. It was the closest vote in the history of the award. Ingram led his team to an undefeated-SEC Championship season, with a trip to the National Championship game against Texas coming next month. He finished the season with 1,542 yards and 15 touchdowns. Toby Gerhart was better statistically with 1,736 yards and 26 TDs. Ingram's team enjoyed much more success than Stanford's 8-4 record, helping him in the end. I'm sure Alabama fans are ecstatic, however they will be even happier if they take down the Longhorns next month.
Here's how the rest of the competition stacked up...
Third place went to Texas QB Colt McCoy, last year's runner-up. Colt led his team to an undefeated season and a Big XII Championship, although saw all of his numbers slip compared to last season. He still finished with 3,512 yards, 27 TDs and 12 INTs.
Fourth place went to the most dominating defensive force in college football, Ndamukong Suh. Suh was an absolute menace on the D-line all season, wreaking havoc against every opponent. He is expected to be a top pick in April's NFL Draft.
And in fifth place was Tim Tebow in what has been the worst two weeks of his successful college football career. Tebow was attempting to be the first two-time winner since the only person to do it, Archie Griffin. Tebow led his team to a one-loss season at the hands of Alabama in the SEC Championship game. His passing stats were down significantly from last season, explaining his drop in the voting.
